Glossary of South Africanisms

Apart from our funny accent which I have been favorably informed by an air hostess on a major American airline was “beautiful to hear”, we South African’s use some really funny phrases and words. Here I try to decipher some of them for you, should you ever be invited for a potjie or a braai.

  1. Braai : This is a BBQ but on an open wood fired grill. In some parts of South Africa, it is frowned upon to use gas
  2. Blitz : Wood fire lighters
  3. Potjie : Three legged cast iron pot in which you cook stew on coals
  4. Biltong : It’s like Jerky. Actually it is not like Jerky at all. It’s a gazillion times better
  5. Boet / Bra / Bru : Brother or good friend that you will braai with
  6. Chom / China / Cuzin : Brother or good friend that you will braai with
  7. Boerewors : Spicy Sausage that you put on the braai
  8. Droewors : Dry Sausage, also not at all like Jerky
  9. Chow : To eat something
  10. Eina : Ouch
  11. Eish : Term of Surprise. Eish this fire is hot
  12. Fundi : Expert / Braai-master
  13. Gogga : Bug
  14. Howzit : Hello. How are you?
  15. Ja, Nee : Basically Yes, No meaning you agree or confirm something
  16. Jislaaik : Like Eish but not exactly
  17. Jol : Party
  18. Jollers : Party goers
  19. Lekker : Great / Tasty
  20. Now Now : Immediately / soon / sometime soon and sooner than just now or right now
  21. Oke : Man or guy. More formal than Bru or Cuzin
  22. Sarmie : Sandwich
  23. Shebeen : Unlicensed bar our alcohol outlet
  24. Yebo : Yes
  25. Biscuit : Term of affection for a good thing done
  26. Bokke : Triple world champion rugby team
  27. Cozzy : Swimming / bathing costume
  28. Hundreds : Excellent
  29. Gooi : Chuck or throw
  30. Sosatie : Kebab
  31. Slops : Sandles
  32. Tekkies : Running shoes
  33. Veld : Bush
